Fire Destroys Lake Wales Home, Resident Escapes Flames

Firefighters pumped streams of water on the east side of a burning mobile homes, but flames continued to leap from the roof of the structure, which was totally engulfed in the fire. No one suffered serious injury as the resident was able to escape the home.

A raging fire that sent flames leaping dozens of feet into the air and alarmed many area residents destroyed a Lake Wales residence shortly after 5:30 Monday afternoon.

The emergency call was received by first responders at 5:28 p.m. and within minutes at least 13 fire rescue and Medical team vehicles were rolling to the flaming structure on Ridge manor Drive. Smoke from the inferno was reportedly visible from more than two miles away.

Witnesses told Lake Wales News that the flames quickly engulfed the mobile home, which appeared to be a total loss. A man that neighbors identified as the sole occupant of the structure was seen walking nearby, apparently unhurt, as firefighters doused the flames.

Lake Wales Fire Department was backed by Polk County Fire Rescue in battling the fire, which had many neighbors nervous due to the extremely dry conditions and the proximity of nearby homes that were exposed to the heat of the fire.

Smoke from the Monday afternoon fire was visible for several miles as fire equipment rushed to the scene of the conflagration. Both Lake Wales and Polk County firefighters responded to the fire to assure that the fire didn't spread to neighboring homes.

The fire call was reported by emergency services as 110 Ridge Manor Drive, but the house involved appeared to be a neighboring residence at 118 Ridge manor Drive.

By 6 p.m. the fire appeared to be under control, but the home appeared to be a total loss..
