Road Was Closed for Five Hours Saturday Evening
The fourth local traffic fatality in a week took the life of a 24-year-old woman, who died following a head on crash on on Hatchineha Road Saturday evening. The crash happened after she attempted to pass another vehicle.
The woman was reported by law enforcement to have been driving a a 4-door green Nissan Sentra on Hatchineha Road just east of Jennings Road at approximately 7:22 p.m. Saturday evening when she entered the eastbound lane into the path of a a white Nissan pickup truck driven by a Lakeland man.
According to witness statements taken at the scene, the Sentra was heading westbound and was attempting to pass the vehicle in front of it by pulling out into the eastbound lane at the same time that the truck was heading eastbound.
According to investigators, both drivers swerved prior to the impact but were unable to avoid colliding. The vehicles came to rest on the shoulder of the road, which was shut down in both directions for approximately three hours.
The driver of the Sentra was extracted from her vehicle by Polk County Fire Rescue after suffering life threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, a 30-year-old male, also suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Both were transported to the hospital.
The female driver of the Sentra succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. There were no other occupants in either vehicle.
PCSO Traffic Homicide and forensic detectives are continuing their investigation into the accident.
