Annual "Ready to Soar" School Supply Backpack Giveaway Happens August 17

Lake Wales Police Department officers and K-9 teams are often the center of attention at the backpack giveaway events at Polk State College.

Polk State College is hosting its annual school supply giveaway event to provide students and families with support and resources as the new school year begins, including up to 500 backpacks and 1,500 books.

Students and families are invited to attend Polk State College's "Ready to Soar" event August 17 at the JD Alexander Center in Lake Wales. The Center is located at 152 East. Central Avenue in Lake Wales.

The event is open to the public and intended for students from kindergarten through college. While supplies last, each student will receive a backpack with school supplies and will have the opportunity to select a book to take home thanks to a donation by the Family Literacy Academy at Lake Wales.

Hundreds of students in ages ranging from kindergarten to college gather to take advantage of the annual backpack giveaway at the Polk State College Lake Wales campus.

The popular event runs from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and normally features entertainment activities along with food trucks and other amenities. The Polk State College Foundation, in partnership with the Lake Wales Police Department, will also provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks for students and families at the event, while supplies last.

Donations to the Polk State Foundation can be made online at foundation.polk.edu to support community events like this as well as scholarships for students.

The Polk State College Lake Wales campus is located at 152 East Central Avenue in downtown Lake Wales.

Polk State College is a multi-campus institution serving more than 14,000 students with Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Science, Associate in Arts, and Associate in Science degrees, as well as 9,000 individuals in a wide range of certificate and workforce training programs.
