Major Richard (Dick) S. Kenney, 1950-2024

US Army Pilot

Major Richard (Dick) S. Kenney, 73, of Lake Wales, FL, passed away peacefully on July 2nd, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Lorain, Ohio, on July 31, 1950, to Jim and Dorothy (Stanley) Kenney, Dick was a lifelong adventurer. He attended Lake Wales High School and was a proud member of the JROTC. After earning an associate's degree from Polk County Community College, he continued his studies at Northeast Louisiana University, majoring in game management and ecology. Dick's love of country led him to accept a commission in the Army in 1971, where he served as a helicopter pilot, flying Hueys and Cobras. During his distinguished military career, he was stationed in Germany and Korea, retiring as a Major in 1994.

Always an outdoorsman, Dick found solace in hunting, fishing, and camping, and he loved sharing stories of his childhood and military adventures. An avid reader with a particular fondness for science fiction, military history, and Westerns, Dick was known for his sharp wit and his encyclopedic knowledge of military procedures. He was passionate about his hobbies and was never shy about correcting inaccuracies, especially in movies (It's NOT "over and out"!! It's one or the other, not both!).

Dick leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He is survived by his daughter Erika (Rick Buck) Kenney-Buck, his sons Jason (Crystal) Kenney and Reilly Kenney, and his grandchildren Phiona, Merrick, London, and Talon, with another expected in December 2024. He is also survived by his sisters Lynda Kenney, Karen (Sarah) Kenney, and Liza (Ted) Schroder, along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jim Kenney, his daughter Branwyn Kenney, and several faithful canine companions who shared in his hunting adventures.

His dedication to his family, his passion for life, and his unwavering sense of duty will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service for Dick was held on July 31st at Greenleaf River of Life Church of God in Winter Haven, FL. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a cause that supports wildlife, animal shelters, the environment, or veterans.
