Movie Review: 'Am I Ok?' A Sweet Exploration of Friendship and Self-Discovery

Am I Ok?" is a charming new dramedy from directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, starring Dakota Johnson. It recently landed on Max after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival and other film festivals in 2022.

Dakota Johnson stars in "Am I OK", a new dramedy from directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne.

I watched this because I love the director and guest star of the movie Tig Notaro. Notaro is a chief engineer on Star Trek Discovery. She is very funny in that part.

This film is a bit more heartfelt.

This story centers on Lucy (Johnson) and Jane, best friends navigating a turning point in their lives. Lucy's journey of self-discovery throws their bond into question, forcing both women to confront their own truths.

Lucy can be very frustrating. She's indecisive and prone to emotional outbursts, but Johnson portrays her with endearing vulnerability. The real heart of the film lies in the dynamic between Lucy and Jane. Their love and frustration for each other feel genuine, making their journey relatable.

The highlight of the movie for me is definitely when Tig Notaro appears in the hammock scene. It's a moment of pure comedic relief that perfectly complements the film's warm tone. Best part!

"Am I Ok?" is a slow burn, but it ultimately delivers a heartwarming and satisfying payoff.

This is a film worth checking out. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
