Movie Review: "One Love" Shares New Story of Rise of Reggae Legend Bob Marley

"One Love" chronicles the rise of reggae legend Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Even with limited prior knowledge of Marley, this biographical drama offers a captivating glimpse into his journey to superstardom, his family life, and of course, the irresistible music.

The film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, serves as a delightful entry point for casual fans like myself. I was surprised how many reggae classics I recognized, from "Three Little Birds" to hidden gems I hadn't known were Marley's. However, devoted fans may find "One Love" sanitized.

My Marley-expert father lamented the omission of key aspects of the singer's life, like his long-term London girlfriend who inspired some of his most beloved love songs. This sanitized portrayal is likely due to the film's collaboration with the Marley family, who understandably aimed to showcase Bob in the best possible light.

"One Love" could have benefited from a deeper exploration of the sociopolitical climate in Jamaica during Marley's rise. Understanding the struggles and yearning for unity that fueled his music would have enriched the viewing experience.

The acting by the lead stars was very well done, however Ben-Adir doesn't sing that well.

One of the most heartfelt moments in the movie to me was when Marley forgives the person who tried to do him harm. I felt he lived out his message in that moment.

Despite these shortcomings, "One Love" is an enjoyable crowd-pleaser. It effectively functions as a gateway to delve deeper into Marley's life and music. I was inspired to listen to the entire Exodus album for the first time ever. "One Love" serves its purpose by igniting a desire to explore the vast and impactful artistry of Bob Marley.
