Communication Builds Our Community
New Technology Added for Lake Wales Patients
A historic decline in breast cancer death rates has been partly attributed to improvements in early detection, Lake Wales area patients seeking the best in care can now rely on local resources after AdventHealth Lake Wales cut the ribbon on a new 3D mammography unit.
The new technology is designed to provide potentially lifesaving screenings for women and men and fill a critical need in the community.
AdventHealth Lake Wales CEO Royce Brown said this new 3D mammography unit will assure patients do not have to leave the city to get this critical care.
"We know guaranteeing access to exceptional health care within Polk County is crucial," Brown said. "The introduction of the new 3D mammography unit at AdventHealth Lake Wales ensures patients can schedule important screenings close to where they live and work. This underscores our commitment to early detection and prioritizing the well-being of our community."
Health experts say when detected early, breast cancer has a nearly 100 percent survival rate. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will have breast cancer during her lifetime. A 3D mammogram is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard screening mammogram.
Using 3D mammography makes it easier for doctors to catch breast cancer early and it also helps doctors see the cancer size much better than they could on a regular mammogram. Most insurance carriers pay 100 percent of a patient's 3D screening mammogram once per calendar year.
The new equipment was paid for through money raised by the AdventHealth Polk Foundation through the community along with a large donation from Truist Financial Corp.
"Truist is committed to creating an impact in the communities we serve," said Rob McCollum, Market President at Truist and AdventHealth Polk Foundation Board Chair.
"Being able to partner with the AdventHealth Polk Foundation to help fund 3D mammography was a perfect fit for us," McCollum said. "As the board chair for the Foundation, I know how important early detection breast cancer service is and was passionate about it being offered close to home."
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer rates declined 40 percent between 1989 to 2017 among women. The progress is attributed to both improvements in treatment and early detection.
The 3D Mammography Unit is located in the Women's Health Services Department at AdventHealth Lake Wales, located at 410 East 11th Street, Lake Wales, Florida. Those wishing to schedule a 3D mammogram may contact the department at 863-679-6858.
