Communication Builds Our Community
Representatives of thirteen area charitable organizations were smiling Thursday evening as they assembled to receive grant awards resulting from the efforts of the Lake Wales Mardi Gras.
The event, hosted at Wales Pointe Restaurant, saw the awarding of a total of $26,000 to the groups. The $26,000 raised and donated by the Lake Wales Mardi Gras Committee represents funds raised in donations by sponsors, vendor fees, and sales during the event.
The annual charitable donations are also motivation for the 100 or so volunteers who make the annual event happen. The Mardi Gras celebration, now planning for its 40th year, draws thousands of visitors and tens of thousands of residents to the streets of downtown Lake Wales and Lake Wailes Park. The Multi-day festival features parades, a music festival, and plenty of side parties hosted by parade "krewes" and other groups.
The groups receiving shares of the funds this year include Rotary on the Ridge, Victory Ridge Academy, Lake Wales Little Theatre, Refuge on the Ridge, Lake Wales (Highlander Band) Boosters, KT Sunshine Foundation, Candle Light Christian Academy,
Lake Wales Police Department's "Shop with a Cop" program, the Lake Wales Fire Department, the Lake Wales Family Literacy Academy, Lake Wales Little League, Lake Wales Youth Soccer, and the Lake Wales Charter School Foundation, as a contribution toward funding the historic 1919 school building.
