Highlanders Win State Championship Game

Women's Softball Title is Second State Title for High School This Scholastic Year

The women of the Lake Wales High School softball team were all smiles in Clermont Thursday afternoon after winning the state softball class with 7-2 a victory over Wakulla.

The Crawfordville school came into the playoffs with a better overall record, but the Highlanders had played a tougher schedule, and it showed.

The Highlanders earned their way to the title game by defeating Lemon Bay by a 5-0 score on Wednesday.

The day started well for the Highlanders as shortstop Zamya McBurrows hit a single to right field that squeaked through the legs of the Wakulla War Eagles defender and rolled to the fence, allowing the speedy McBurrows to score the first run. The Lake Wales squad never looked back, building a 7-0 lead by late in the game before Wakulla rallied to score two runs on a series of hits in the seventh inning.

The Highlanders had advanced to the state title game last year but fell short in the title game, losing to Deltona. The approached the season-ending tournament in a businesslike fashion, concentrating on winning the championship.

The victory earns the Lake Wales High School Highlanders their second state title in their scholastic year, following the football championship won in December over Daytona Mainland.
