Communication Builds Our Community

Frostproof Rallies Around Woman Battling Cancer for the Third Time

In a tightknit community, one person's battle with cancer can become a community cause. Such in the case in Frostproof, where fundraising is ongoing for Alice Hollis Evans, who is battling cancer and a blood clot.

Evans, known lovingly as "Mimi," is not in her first first fight with cancer. This is her third.

In November of 2015, Alice's youngest son, Ryan Evans, donated a kidney and Alice underwent a transplant as a result of the cancer.

"She loves her family," said Evan's older sister, Peggy Summerlin. "She is still in the hospital right now in Celebration, but her grandchildren mean everything to her. She is a very loved person, everyone in Frostproof knows her."

Even the Frostproof American Legion Post 95 has gotten involved with the cause, and is hosting a yard sale on Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at their post at 229 East Wall Street in Frostproof. The public is invited to donate usable items, and encouraged to shop for them as well.

Summerlin is organizing many fundraising efforts including a GoFundMe, a yard sale, cash donations, and even inviting individuals to send get-well cards to Hollis Evans.

Hollis Evans' daughter, Cindey Evans Manning, is due with a baby very soon and was so happy to have her mother at the baby shower. Evans Manning also reaffirmed how well known and loved her mother is in Frostproof.

Those who may wish to join Frostproof in supporting this family can do so directly through a GoFundMe account set up for the purpose.

The family is also accepting cash donations, those wishing to help may contact Peggy Summerlin at 863-241-8072. Get well cards can be sent to 243 Chesney Blvd., Frostproof, Florida, 33843.
