Communication Builds Our Community
Cathryn "Cathy" Sullivan Powers, 73, of Lake Wales, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2023, at her residence.
She was born June 1, 1949, in Greenville, Mississippi to the late James K. Sullivan and Gloria K. (Weathers) Sullivan. She spent her formative years between Greenville, Dallas, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cathy graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, TX in 1967. She graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1971. Cathy was always an avid athlete and enjoyed softball, diving, tennis, and golf. She was a member of the University of Mississippi Woman's tennis team and Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
Her husband's career took her and her family to Japan in 1982. She became Head Administrator for Central Texas College and in her spare time taught English to local Japanese students. Cathy enjoyed traveling throughout Japan and several other countries in the Far East. This included an amazing trip to Seoul, Korea for the 1988 Summer Olympics.
She and her family moved back to the US in 1989, settling in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Cathy always had a passion for helping people and parlayed this into a very successful career in Real Estate. She was a million-dollar producer for multiple years and eventually became a broker.
After retirement, she and her husband moved to the Lake Ashton Retirement Community in November 2015. These were absolutely the best years of her life. She and her husband played golf and spent their evenings going to parties, playing card games, Mexican train(dominoes) as well as the many dances and shows sponsored within the community. She was the ultimate social butterfly and had more friends than you can count. Lake Ashton will miss her dearly.
Cathy also enjoyed going on cruises and gambling. Her favorite casino game was Black Jack. She and her son, Hilliard, enjoyed wagering on Football Games together. At around the age of 5, her son could often be heard asking, "Mom, who are you voting on today?"
She was preceded in death by her children, James L. Powers and Cathryn E. Powers.
Survivors include her husband, Edward J. Powers of 50 years, son Edward H. Powers of Huntsville, sister Jamie Sullivan Rogers and husband Lyle of Colorado Springs, Colorado along with many nieces and nephews.
