Sun Rail Seeks Your Opinion as it Considers Extension Into Polk

Public Asked to Complete Survey

The Federal Railroad Administration Friday gave SunRail and Brightline, Central Florida's dual passenger train ambitions, an extension of the looming deadline to apply for funding to expand from Orlando's airport to the region's tourism hub and across Polk County to Tampa. Sun Rail currently serves 16 locations between Poinciana and DeBary.

The Florida Department of Transportation is responsible for coordinating local governments and the private Brightline Trains, which are already constructing a line to connect Orlando with South Florida. FDOT is seeking a grant from the $4.6 billion Federal Infrastructure fund created by the Recovery Act in support of expanded rail service.

To support the grant request, FDOT and Polk County have begun a stud to determine interest in riding the line, and where citizens believe stations should be located along the proposed routes, which closely follow the existing rails and I-4 corridor across the northern portion of the county. A line running south along the crowded US 27 corridor is not currently under consideration.

The survey will be live during February. Those wishing to offer comments may click on this link.
