Mardi Gras Lights Up the Night in Lake Wales

Big Crowds Expected for Today's Parade, Music Festival

The Lake Wales Mardi Gras celebrations have reached their climactic day as crowds are preparing for the annual parade, continuing a local tradition now in its fifth decade.

The big parade of Krewes, always a major highlight of the event, will step off at 3:00 today on Park Avenue before winding down Stuart and Central Avenues, ending at Lake Wailes Park, where the ongoing Mardi Gras Music Festival will continue into the night.

More than a dozen colorful Krewes will parade floats and costumes while tossing more than 100,000 "throws" to the gathered throngs of celebrants. The parade normally features at least one "dance team" as the all-female Krewe of ZaZu brings cheers from the crowd with their entertaining routines.

The local Mardi Gras festivities officially began last week as the Loyal Order of Wild Shiners hosted the annual "Black Light Ball," attracting hundreds to the two-band celebration.

The eleven days of celebrations will end this week on Fat Tuesday as the Krewe of Pegasus wraps up the event with their own masquerade party at the Y'all Come Back Saloon on SR 60 East. The public is invited to attend all the Mardi Gras events.
