Communication Builds Our Community
Saturday Morning Event to Recognize Players and Coaches Who Made It Happen
The entire Lake Wales community is invited to come out and share some Highlander Pride to celebrate the Lake Wales High School Highlanders first state football championship.
The event will take place Saturday morning, February 25 in Kiwanis Park on North Lakeshore Boulevard, less than a mile east of Legion Field, where the majority of their 15 season victories took place.
The Highlander's unprecedented season saw them dominate district rivals, smash their way past regional opposition, and outscore their opponents 598 to 97. Their only close game was the title game against Daytona Mainland, played in the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. They won that game by a final score of 32-30 after trailing by 10 points early.
The Highlanders were dominating on both sides of the ball, sacking opposing quarterbacks 119 times for 479 yards. They set a stunning mark of generating 19 fumble recoveries and 37 interceptions during the season, most through interceptions. Two critical picks at the goal line figured into the victory over Daytona.
Several graduating Highlanders players have drawn scholarship offers, including Division 1 teams. Local fans expect to follow their heroes through their college careers.
The Saturday morning event is expected to draw a big crowd of fans who have longed for an opportunity to show their appreciation to the team. A food truck offering seafood and chicken will be there to feed the crowd, along with DJ Bowlegz who will spin the tunes for the crowd. Emcee Smartmouth will be calling on the people who made it happen to step forward to be recognized. Local politicos are also expected to attend and grab a share of the limelight.
