Student Killed by Truck at School Bus Stop

Tragedy struck Friday morning as a McLaughlin Middle School student was killed after being struck by a truck while waiting near a school bus stop in the fog.

Lake Wales Police Department reports indicate that Jadin Galindo, 13, was waiting for his school bus in the dark at about 6:15 am when he was struck by a 2013 GMC Sierra truck. According to police reports the alleyway where he was sitting, near the intersection of Miami Street and Dr. JA Wiltshire Avenue, near Florida's Natural Growers, was unlighted. A large fenced warehouse building stands diagonally across the two streets from the scene of the accident.

The GMC Sierra was traveling east on Wiltshire Avenue and turned north into the alleyway where the victim was struck. He was was transported to the AdventHealth Lake Wales Medical Center by Polk County Emergency Medical Services but succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the GMC, 47-year-old Sherry Kinney of Bartow, formerly of Lake Wales, and her passenger, Kimberly Johnson, 33, also of Bartow were uninjured. According to police neither speed nor impairment appear to be a factor in the incident.

This investigation is active and ongoing.
