Motorists Are Advised to Use Caution Through Construction Zones
The Florida Department of Transportation is heavily involved in improvements to area highways, and motorists are advised to use caution through the construction areas, which include a portion of SR 60 from west of Dude Ranch Road to east of Rattlesnake Road. The area is expected to see work ongoing until next summer.
The work in that area includes resurfacing SR 60 and side street entrances and removing acceleration lanes for safety, according to the FDOT. It will also include widening for bike lane striping at the right turn lanes, improving drainage, repairing cross slopes, and regrading ditches.
This week crews will be actively involved in grading ditches and installing pipe.
Area drivers should watch for lower speed limits and higher fines for speeding. There will be daytime shoulder closures and workers present close to the road.
Other area projects include the traffic-snarling intersection of US 27 and SR 60, which is being coverted from a semi-cloverleaf design into an urban signalized intersection. Both roadways are also being widened to six lanes through the intersection.
Further work on US 27 South is expected to begin in coming months as that highway will be widened to six lanes to the Highlands County line.
