Polk State College to Offer New Degree in Human Resources

Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management and an Advanced Certificate Option.

Polk State College is launching two opportunities for individuals seeking education and training in Human Resources Management – a concentration within the Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management and an advanced certificate option.

Both prepare students for Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) certification and careers or promotions as HR managers and specialists.

“At Polk State, we follow the industry needs in the community closely,” explained Maria Lehoczky, Director of Business Programs. “HR managers and specialists continue to make the regional demand lists within Polk County and within the state. We also heard from many industry partners and advisory boards that this was a critical need.”

“The students will benefit because Polk State will provide them with the quality curriculum and support services to prepare for the SHRM certification, a revered professional designation within the industry, and ultimately a rewarding career in human resources as HR specialists and managers,” she added.

The entry wages for HR specialists and managers are approximately $39,500 and $66,500, with median wages reaching $56,000 and $102,500, respectively, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Additionally, these positions consistently make the high-demand occupational list for Polk County.

The concentration within the Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management Program is designed for students with an associate degree who are seeking upper-level studies and a bachelor’s degree. This program takes approximately five semesters and culminates with a capstone course focused on preparation for the SHRM and a career in HR.

The advanced certificate is designed for students with either an associate or a bachelor’s degree who are seeking training specific to HR. It can be completed in 12 to 18 months and provides participants with the option to enroll in the capstone course, although it is not a requirement for completion of the certificate.

Class schedules are designed to accommodate working professionals with both online and hybrid options over the course of eight weeks. The hybrid option incorporates online courses and in-person classes that meet on Fridays and Saturdays.

Courses will cover topics including benefits and compensation, organizational structure, labor relations, legal issues, cross-cultural management, and more. Classes are being built and taught by SHRM-certified instructors and subject matter experts.

Additionally, students will have experiential learning and networking opportunities including internships and participation in Polk State’s Society of Human Resource Management Chapter.

“Students will gain an understanding of all things human resources and build on their interpersonal and critical thinking skills,” Lehoczky said.

The first class of Human Resources Management students will begin on August 15. Currently enrolled students can register for classes now in Passport. Open enrollment will begin on June 6. Prospective students should submit an online application to Polk State.
