Sample ballots for the March 17 Presidential Preference Primary Election are available online at PolkElections.com. The upcoming election is open to voters registered with the Democratic or Republican parties who will choose their nominee for the presidential election in November.
As of Feb. 26 Polk County had 160,551 registered Republicans and 155,399 registered Democrats. The 128,569 Polk voters who are registered with minor parties or no party affiliation are not permitted to vote in the presidential preference primary, since Florida is a closed primary state. This means that only registered Democrats may vote for Democratic candidates and only registered Republicans may vote for Republican candidates.
Voters will notice that candidates who have left the race remain on the ballot. The deadline for candidates to remove their name from the ballot was Dec. 19.
Candidates to appear on the Democratic primary ballot are: Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Michael R. Boomberg, Cory Boker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, John Delany, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Kobluchar, Deval Patrick, Bernie Sanders, Joe Sestak, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang.
Candidates to appear on the Republican primary ballot are: Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente, Donald J. Trump, Joe Walsh and Bill Weld.
"According to state law, votes for all candidates on the ballot will be counted," said Lori Edwards, Supervisor of Elections.
